CO₂ laser resurfacing has earned its reputation as one of the most effective treatments for improving skin texture, acne scarring, wrinkles and sun damage. When performed appropriately, it can dramatically improve skin quality by stimulating collagen production and encouraging healthier, smoother skin to develop during the healing process.

However, CO₂ laser resurfacing is also one of the most advanced treatments available in aesthetic medicine.

Unlike treatments that work on the skin’s surface, CO₂ laser deliberately creates a controlled injury within the skin. That controlled injury is what drives the impressive results, but it also means the treatment requires careful planning, appropriate patient selection, precise laser settings and expert aftercare.

When those elements come together, complications are uncommon. When they don’t, the consequences can be serious. At Enhance Clinispa, we recently treated a patient whose experience highlights why choosing the right practitioner is just as important as choosing the right treatment.

When Cost Becomes the Deciding Factor

Like many patients, this lady wanted to improve the appearance of her skin with CO₂ laser resurfacing. Her decision on where to have treatment was largely influenced by price. She underwent treatment in a non-medical setting with someone who had no medical background.

Initially, everything appeared to be progressing as expected. Some redness, swelling and crusting are completely normal after ablative CO₂ laser resurfacing and form part of the skin’s natural healing process. However, within days it became clear that her recovery was not following the normal pattern.

Her skin became increasingly painful, swollen and heavily infected. The swelling around her eyes also worsened significantly. Despite raising concerns, she was reportedly reassured that this was simply part of the normal healing process.

Rather than receiving a proper medical assessment, she says she was handed a small quantity of antibiotics in a sandwich bag without a consultation or formal prescription. As her symptoms continued to deteriorate, she attended hospital where she was diagnosed with a severe facial infection and orbital cellulitis.

Orbital cellulitis is a medical emergency involving the tissues surrounding the eye. Without prompt treatment, it has the potential to threaten vision and allow infection to spread beyond the eye socket. She required hospital admission and treatment with intravenous antibiotics.

Understandably, once the immediate medical emergency had passed, her greatest concern became whether her skin would ever recover.

CO₂ Laser Resurfacing Is a Medical Procedure

Stories like this are thankfully uncommon, but they demonstrate an important point. CO₂ laser resurfacing should never be viewed as simply another cosmetic facial.

The laser removes microscopic areas of skin while creating controlled thermal injury beneath the surface. This stimulates wound healing and collagen remodelling, but it also temporarily compromises the skin’s protective barrier. Because of this, practitioners must understand far more than how to operate the laser itself.

Safe treatment requires knowledge of:

  • Skin anatomy and wound healing
  • Laser physics and energy delivery
  • Patient selection
  • Infection prevention
  • Medical complications
  • Appropriate aftercare
  • When recovery is no longer following the expected course

The technology is only one part of the treatment, clinical judgement is equally important.

Not Every CO₂ Laser Treatment Is the Same

Many people understandably assume that CO₂ laser resurfacing is a standardised treatment. In reality, there are significant differences between laser platforms, treatment protocols and practitioner experience. Different devices deliver energy in different ways.

Treatment depth, density and energy settings all need to be adjusted according to the patient’s skin type, concerns and ability to heal. Even two practitioners using exactly the same machine may produce very different outcomes depending on the settings they choose and the experience they have.

A more aggressive treatment does not necessarily produce a better result. Likewise, selecting treatment based on price alone can become far more expensive if complications develop.

Knowing the Difference Between Normal Healing and a Complication

One of the challenges following CO₂ laser resurfacing is that normal recovery can look dramatic. Patients should expect redness, swelling, oozing, crusting and tenderness during the first few days. However, while these symptoms are expected, they should gradually improve as healing progresses. Increasing pain, worsening swelling, pus, fever, significant discharge or swelling around the eyes are not typical recovery features and require urgent assessment.

One of the most valuable parts of medical aftercare is recognising when recovery is moving away from what would normally be expected. Sometimes reassurance is appropriate. Sometimes early intervention prevents a minor problem from becoming a major complication. That judgement comes from medical training and experience, not simply from owning an expensive laser.

Recovery Doesn’t Always End When the Infection Clears

Fortunately, after hospital treatment, the infection resolved. Unfortunately, the damage caused by the severe inflammatory response did not disappear overnight.

The patient was left with widespread persistent erythema, the medical term for prolonged redness caused by inflammation and injury to the superficial blood vessels within the skin.

At this stage, the priority was not performing another aggressive laser treatment. Skin that has recently experienced significant trauma needs time to recover. Introducing excessive heat into already inflamed tissue could potentially prolong healing rather than improve it. Instead, our focus became restoring the skin’s health while gradually reducing the persistent redness.

Why We Chose a Gentle Treatment Approach

Every treatment plan at Enhance Clinispa is tailored to the individual patient’s skin. Following this patient’s recovery from infection, we developed a staged approach that combined injectable skin quality treatment with gentle vascular laser therapy.

Supporting Skin Recovery With Profhilo®

The first part of the plan involved Profhilo®. Profhilo is not a treatment for infection or laser burns, and it was only introduced once the hospital team had successfully treated the infection. Its role was to improve hydration within the skin, enhance overall skin quality and support tissue recovery as part of the rehabilitation process. Rather than attempting to camouflage the damage, the aim was to improve the environment in which the skin continued to heal.

Reducing Persistent Redness With DEKA Motus Pro

Alongside Profhilo, we treated the remaining vascular redness using our new DEKA Motus Pro laser with the Moveo VL handpiece. Moveo VL specifically targets superficial blood vessels that contribute to persistent facial redness. Unlike more aggressive vascular treatments that deliver a single high-energy pulse, Moveo technology gradually builds heat within the target vessels using repeated passes.

For compromised skin, this allows treatment to be delivered in a far gentler and more controlled manner. In patients recovering from significant inflammation, respecting the skin’s healing process is often just as important as selecting the right treatment itself.

Two Months Later

Over the following two months, the patient underwent:

  • Two Profhilo treatments
  • Two vascular laser treatments using the DEKA Motus Pro Moveo VL handpiece

With each session, the persistent redness continued to improve as the skin barrier recovered and inflammation gradually settled.

The improvement seen was not the result of one treatment, but of carefully selecting the right treatments at the right stage of healing.

The Results

Just two months after beginning treatment at Enhance Clinispa, the transformation is remarkable. The severe inflammation has resolved. The persistent redness has reduced dramatically. Her skin appears healthier, calmer and significantly more even than when she first attended the clinic.

Although skin remodelling continues for many months following a severe inflammatory injury, these early results demonstrate what can often be achieved with appropriate medical assessment, realistic treatment planning and patience.

How to Choose a Safe Laser Practitioner

Complications like this are fortunately rare, but they reinforce why choosing the right clinic matters.

Before undergoing CO₂ laser resurfacing, ask yourself:

  • Who will actually perform my treatment?
  • Do they have medical qualifications and experience with ablative laser procedures?
  • Is the treatment being carried out in a medical environment?
  • What aftercare will I receive?
  • Who will review me if I have concerns during recovery?
  • What happens if I develop a complication?

The answers to these questions may be far more important than the price quoted.

Expertise Is Part of the Treatment

When patients compare the cost of laser resurfacing, it’s easy to focus on the machine being used. In reality, you’re investing in far more than access to advanced technology.

You’re investing in clinical assessment, treatment planning, medical knowledge, careful aftercare and the reassurance that if recovery doesn’t follow the expected path, someone has both the experience and expertise to recognise it and respond appropriately.

At Enhance Clinispa, every laser treatment begins with a comprehensive consultation. We assess your skin, medical history, concerns and treatment goals before recommending the most appropriate approach, with your safety always at the centre of the treatment plan.

Our care doesn’t end when the laser switches off. We continue to support you throughout the healing process, providing clear aftercare and ongoing clinical guidance as your skin recovers.
